The teck 2 scanner is able to check all GM before 2009

I  just did a “Fast-Learn” on a G8’s 6L80E last week with mine. A Snap-On MODUS was not able to do this. There are simply factory diagnostic procedures that a T2 can do on GM vehicles that no other tool can. But yes, to reflash PCM’s, TCM’s, etc, you need to have authorization from the Tech Center, which means you have to be a dealership or a paying subscriber to the service which is a serious chunk of $$$$.

With that said, Bosch (who now owns the rights to GM Tech 2‘s as they purchased out Vetronix), will not support the unit because it’s a factory knock-off. So should you have to replace the VCI module (I’ve had to replace mine due to wear and tear on the connection where it damaged the motherboard inside), or any other necessary repair.

Also, T2’s can only be updated through 2009 MY vehicle info, was my understanding from GM. For 2009+ GM has gone to a new setup called MDI. GM MDI is backwards compatible with pre-2009 GM vehicles (it even has the software on the screen to emulate the screens you’d see on the T2).

So is this teck 2 scanner able to check all GM before 2009 obd2 with out extra software? Also wonder if it can check the cam/ distributor retard timing on vortex 350

I think the GM MDI system will go back to 2009, but the Tech2 seems to work as far as its updated. Obviously I don’t have any 2012-2013 vehicles to try it on though.

It will work on any Car Diagnostic Tool GM OBD2, meaning 1996+.

Here you can see its updated to 2013.

Obd2tool.com Engineers Solution:
Depending on your computer hardware, you could install XP and your app in a Virtual Machine (VM) from Windows 7. Once installed and configured, you would boot your computer like normal and start XP in a window.

VMware makes Virtual Machine software called Workstation v10. They have a trial, but expect money at some point. The second best option for VM software is called VirtualBox from Sun. It is free!
You would just need a compatible computer, a copy of Windows XP and time to learn the ropes and get your XP Virtual Machine (VM) up and running. Learning how to use it is a one-time thing and at that point you’ll be familiar with VM software in general. That is a huge benefit to have as a computer user.

At that point you would meet the requirements of the GM Tech 2 software and would install TIS2000 within the VM and use the virtual com/serial port to connect to your computer serial port (or USB).

The GM Tech 2 tool has more powerful and functions

Have you ever search for GM diagnostic tools? And which kinds of auto diagnostic tool is special for your GM vehicles? Here OBD2TOOL will share you two kinds of professional GM diagnostic tools for your reference.

The original GM Tech2 was made by Hewlett Packard and used Vetronix software.  Vetronix purchased the Tech 2 manufacturing rights from HP.  In 2003, Vetronix was acquired by ETAS, a supplier of standardized development and diagnostic tools for electronic control units. In 2006, the Vetronix Aftermarket division merged with Bosch Automotive Aftermarket, responsible for supply, sales and logistics of automotive parts for service of the vehicle.  So today the Tech 2 is ‘made’ by Bosch.

The tech2 and CANDI module worked perfect to diagnose my bad HVAC air door actuator. I have an older HP laptop running win7 and it has a serial port so has no problem to install software. Time will tell how this works out.

the GM Tech 2 tool has more powerful and functions. Authentic software for GM in the Tech 2 Flash means the most comprehensive diagnostic software available for latest model vehicles for GM. And the removable hardware modules provide insurance against scan tool obsolescence.

The GM Tech 2 tool is ability to view the status of vehicle diagnostic tests as they run and to capture stored Freeze Frame and Failure Record for Tech 2 Flash . In addition , The authentic GM 1992-current year software will provide full bi-directional control when performing power train, chassis, and body diagnostics.

The USB Link 2 offers many features

The NEXIQ USB Link 2 is much improved design. We are sure that it will sell very well for a long time given its history and distribution network. If you are looking to purchase one, you can check it on www.obd2tool.com . We have heavy duty truck diagnostic tools in stock, ship very quickly, and help support them after!

The Tech 2 is used for GM Vehicles from 1992-present.  It is kept up to date by updating the 32  MB Pcmcia memory card with the latest diagnostic software.  Current cars with the CAN bus require the CANDI interface for the Tech II to communicate with the vehicle.

The USB Link 2 offers many features including:  RP1210A, RP1210B, RP1210C and J2534 API support, Bluetooth vehicle-to-PC wireless connectivity, USB vehicle-to-PC connectivity, Protocol coverage for automotive to heavy duty vehicles:, 3 CAN – J1939/CAN125/CAN250/CAN500/CAN1000, Automatic bit rate detection for all standard CAN channels, Single Wire CAN, Fault Tolerant CAN, J1587/J1708,  J1850,  ISO 15765 (Diagnostic CAN),  ISO 14230 (KWP2000 over ISO9141), J2534, ALDL, ATEC 160 (160 baud), and Supports Windows 7 32- and 64-bit versions, and Windows 8 32- and 64-bit versions.

A Tech 2 costs — pick a number.  New models appear to cost as much as $4K, and the retail price is shown as even higher — as much as $8K or $9K depending on the site.  Discount new units are available for as low as $2300 on ebay for example, and used units run a bit less.  There appears to be a market in Chinese clones for the GM Tech 2 Scanner and software, although I am opposed to piracy of intellectual property.  My impression from shopping is that you should budget around $2K for an authentic Tech 2 in good condition with all accessories, 32 MB card, and CANDI module.

What’s the Advantage of Nexiq USB Link 2?

What’s the Advantage of Nexiq USB Link 2?
1.Fives time faster than its predecessor (125032)
2.Sixteen times more RAM (random access memory)
3.Supports heavier bus loads on simultaneous channels
4.New Bluetooth module with enhanced data rate to support wireless communication (500K b/s on J1939)
5.USB connector is a more robust, automotive grade quality connector with latching mechanism

An industry change in protocol from OBD II to Controller Area Network (CAN) has begun. In order to perform diagnosis on a vehicle that uses the CAN interface, you will need the Tech 2 Flash and a CAN diagnostic interface module.

Engine control module recovery procedure:
1. Disconnect the programming device.
2. Power down the control modules connected to the GM LAN bus by disconnecting the positive battery cable for 2 minutes.
3. Reconnect the positive battery cable.
4. Determine which programming device will be used to perform the recovery steps.
If using MDI, connect to the programming station or Notebook using a cable (LAN). Proceed to Step 5 and then Steps 6-8.
If using a Tech 2 proceed to Steps 6-8.
5. Reboot the programming station or Notebook. This is to make sure nothing is in memory.
OBD2 Note: Selecting Replace and Reprogram from the Select Diagnostic Tool and Process Screen is REQUIRED because some of the calibrations may be erased from the initial attempt to reprogram the module.
6. Reprogram the engine control module. Select Replace and Reprogram from the Select Diagnostic Tooland Process Screen.
7. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the programming event.
8. Clear all DTCs using the GM Tech 2 Scanner or GDS.
