Possible causes:

The link between the diagnosis multiplexer and the diagnostic socket is interrupted.

The link between the diagnostic multiplexer and the diagnostic unit is interrupted.

The voltage supply at the diagnostic socket (circuit 30 and (or) circuit 31) is faulty.

Note:

When using SDconnect,check the connection status using the Toolkit.

Solution:

1. First check if you use the correct software for Star C3 not sd connect c4, you do not modify software by yourself and it passes self-test.

If all these are okay, replace the Config file in c:\program\mecredes-benz\config

In DAS Developer mode :
Kombiinstrument -> Diagnose nach Werkangabe -> Steuergerate-Anpassungen ->
Steuergerate-Anpassungen (Variantencoderierung) -> Variantkodierung Werkeinstellungen ->

In the menu that shows , you scroll down untill you read the line : Tankinfo im Reichweitebild
enable this option
now you have tankinfo in the screen that otherwise only showed range

If you allso wanna adjust the way fuel consumtion is showed
you scroll a little more down untill you read the line : Verbrauchanzeige km
you can change it from L/100km into km/l

Scroll down and confirm Coding by pressingF3

if you watch your Instrument Cluster , you notice that scrolling through the menu , nothing changed .

For this , the “Kombiinstrument” needs a reboot.
to do this in Developer mode we go back by hitting F1 -> 3 times
then choose Ansteuerungen -> Gesamstliste aller Ansteuerungen ->
Scroll down untill you see the line : Steuergeraet Resetten (PowerON-Modus) (FN_Reset_SG_Power_ON)
Press F3 and confirm again with F3
Now you will see the “Kombiinstrument” reboots

How to register Xentry?

If you use the hard disk in the package, you will find a TOOL folder on the desktop, click it and then “1 – StartKeyCenter”.

According to customer’s feedback that he failed to access to the diagnostic OBD port when tried to use sd connect c4 read errors code from Benz SRS system. The system prompted an error message “check cable connection/turn ignition on”.
Possible Reason:

The error lies on the SD Connect C4’s battery.
Solution from OBD2TOOL.COM:

1) Check and record your MB SD Connect C4 multiplexer battery
2) Hook up a digital multimeter to set it to the direct current
3) Get two t-pins and plug them into the OBD socket at PIN 5 and PIN17 position
4) Put your positive lead to PIN16 and negative lead to PIN5.
5) Write down the voltage on the digital multimeter
6) Check if the voltage you from PIN16 and PIN 5 is same in step 1.
7) Find the light green wire with a blue tracer band of PIN10 of the OBDII connector.
8) If the voltage differs in step 1 and step 6, the problem is probably with your battery.
9) If the battery is damaged or broken, please replace your battery.

You are required to update the MB SD C4 firmware follow the guide here:

1.  Install SD Connect C4 battery
2.  Update SDConnect

MHHAuto Thread: SD Connect C4 — avoiding garbage

I’m in the market for an SD connect C4 on www.cnautotool.com mercedes benz Star Diagnostic Tool and have been trying to spend my time doing some homework to avoid getting a garbage unit. I certainly can understand what a lot of people have been saying about the widely varying quality that’s out there. I am a EE and PCB designer, so I’m trying to make use of that knowledge to select the best unit that I can.

To that end, I’m going to share what info I’ve collected so far, and when I finally end up buying whatever unit I do, I’m going to do a full teardown on it and post the results here.

As another matter, I’ll openly post details on who I buy the unit from and impressions after receiving it.

Near as I can tell right now, there appear to be about 4 “factories” that make different units.

One thing I’ve been asking all of the sellers for (and I would encourage others to do the same) is photos of the actual MB Star C4 SD Connect unit (including PCBs) with a unique identifier in the photo to prove that the unit they say they are going to send me is the actual one they send me. Of course, some sellers immediately bail at this, but then you know who to avoid ahead of time.

In general, a lot of the components used in a Star diagnostic tool SD C4 Multiplexer are getting quite long in the tooth. Many of the parts are approaching 20 years of age. Thus, you stand a fair risk of getting pulls (used parts) and/or remarked parts on these.

In following posts, I’ll provide photos of what I can discern as differences between the MB Star Diagnostic SD Connect C4 units along with some commentary about whatever info I can provide at this point.

to, I’ve outlined some things I feel are important to note. They have a set of 4 analog switches on the PCB. In this photo, they are ADG426 from Analog Devices. I’ve seen some clones that use DG526CY from Harris/Intersil. The DG526CY, besides being completely obsolete, has an typical RDSON of 270 ohms vs 80 for the Analog Devices part. It also has a -55dB isolation vs -75dB for the AD part. In short, the AD part is just a much better mux. So with that said, I would insist on any unit I’m interested in using those.

A second thing you’ll notice is the use of can crystals where 4 pin variants were intended. This is just sloppy and cheap. There may also be issue with loading (and ultimately clock stability) depending on whether they matched the loading caps to the substituted crystal or not.

I haven’t had a set of photos high res enough to look at the rest of the actives in detail yet, as most sellers don’t seem to post them.

There’s also an issue pointed out on the bottom of the board where one of the (what appears to be) MOSFETs in (what appears to be a) D2 PAK looks like it was hand soldered. Again, no good.
