How to get GM TECH2 CANdi module to work

The Candi Module should not plugged into your GM Tech 2 unless you’re working on a later car ..generally 2005 plus. Olders car from 96 should NOT have the Candi Module attached.

OBD I only has 1 ground, so 12 pin adapter connects signal and chassis ground to the Tech 2 cable.

OBD II has chassis and signal ground and they are connected in the cars wiring.

How I was trying to get GM TECH2 CANdi module to work:
Nothing on CANdi end of cable.

Boot screen not showing CANdi present, diagnostics for CANdi says it isn’t seen.

Here I connected OBD I adapter to end of CANdi cable:
OBD I adapter connected.

CANdi module shows up at boot screen.

Green LED flashes about once every second.

Diagnostic screens for CANdi now present. Hit ENTER, 4, 7 to get to this screen.

POST Results.

The weird looking screen is because I have not removed the protective plastic yet.

Tech 2 programs Hummer H2 above 2007

Tech 2 Scan Tool on Hummer H2 above 2007… Possible to do programming? what to do in that case?

Yes! Actually it does the programming just fine on newer than 2007 GM vehicles!
You must:
Pay for an ACDelco TDS subscription for vehicles above 2007 and you would use the CANDI module that comes with many of the Tech2’s for working with CAN bus vehicles. You can subscribe for as little as two days for $55.

This is ONLY needed if you want to program or update the software in a module.

ALL of the build in diagnostics and testing for vehicles up to 2013 works without the subscription or the older TIS2000 software. You only need those for doing actual programming. The older TIS2000 software – that is what has the programming was discontinued in 2007. TIS2000 does have the actual programming for all vehicles up to 2007. After 2007 GM went to the TDS system.

You can also:(for diagnostics and programming)

Get a newer style GM MDI or MDI 2 for diagnostics and programming. The catch with those. They have NO screen or built in software and you must pay for a subscription from from ACDelco TDS to use an MDI.

Other brand units, a very select few can do actual programming and use the pass-through method. NONE have the diagnostics that the actual Tech2 or MDI (with the subscription) will have. Check with Autel and see if they have the full diagnostics and re-calibration for the rear air suspension on a Hummer H2. Not going to happen, there is too little demand for them to hack and reverse engineer that particular bit of code in a Tech2 to figure out the diagnostics and then write programming for that for their tool.

For programming, you also need to have TIS2000 running on a computer or pay GM for a 24 month subscription for their TIS2WEB (Vehicle Programming) for $40
The computer will need a serial port for downloading the programming to the Tech2 for programming your vehicle.

How to do programming wit Tech 2:

The way programming works is you connect the Tech2 to the vehicle and tell it you want to program a module.
It interrogates all of the modules on the vehicle for the current versions and the VIN number.
You then connect it to the computer running TIS2000, GlobalTIS or TIS2WEB subscription and select programming in the computer.
It reads the Tech2 for the vehicle info and then presents you with a list of software for all of the modules and shows you which have updated software.

You’d better only do one module at a time which is a good bit more back and forth but safer.
The computer then loads the update to the Tech2. You take that back to the vehicle and connect it and it then programs the module.
The best, most reliable and safest method:
To use a long enough serial cable (its uses 9 pin serial adapters with an ethernet cable to make the cable longer – so you can just use a longer network cable) and do pass-through programming. In that method the process is the same but you leave the Tech2 connected to both the computer and the vehicle at the same time. Once you select programming on the Tech2 then go to the computer and you can immediately update each module right from the computer.

There is a slightly more updated version of standalone TIS2000 floating around on the web which has additional updates that has software updates for vehicles through 2009 as well. I know just using that TIS2000 both GMC truck and 2003 H2 both had a bunch of software updates available to be programmed all of which fix small issues or improve certain aspects.

One example in on the older single compressor air ride like 2003. Those would run and make small adjustments a LOT more often than needed and the software update fixed that.

On the H2 the rear air ride is also one to be very careful of for doing software updates though. For example, 2003 came with the earlier style single compressor but if it were to fail a dealership would replace it with the newer style dual pump compressor. Programming would still think its the original style and would attempt to program it and that would actually cause it to fail. TIS2000, (Global, Web, etc) will warn you about this sort of thing though so just heed all warnings and follow instructions and its fine.

The programming aspect is not needed or required to use the Tech2. The OBD2 Scanner Tech2 still gives you a TON of diagnostics and tests that NO other OBD device has including things like the air ride module, detailed BCM functions, basically you can control and test every computer module in the vehicle.

Tips on TIS2000 disc for ECM updates

I used the tis 2000 disc for ecm updates.

TIS2000 CD for GM TECH2 GM Car Model

since the TIS200 has all the firmware needed for cars up to 2009, and does not need to connect to GM to pull them down.
As for the 2010 to 2013 cars, need to have a working account with GM since it will need to pull these firmware files from GM over the web, since these needed files will not be part of the 3 discs that come with it.

Hence in 2010, GM switch over to web base programming from computer based Tis2000 , and was the end of the TIS 2000 having the needed files internal for the cars from that point forward.

So if you have a 2010 or later vet, then just get a $40 subscription to TDS SPS for 2 years, and the tech II will be used in pass through mode for over the web programming instead .

Myself, have a TIS2000 built into a VM shell on full working XP software on a win 10 machine so it can connect to the internet, have a GM account, so will pull any firmware that is needed/it does not have for later 2010 cars, from OBD2TOOL over the web

Ways to install TIS2000 TIS2 Web GlobalTIS for TECH 2

This is Trollhattan’s contribution for those thinking about playing using a Tech 2 Scan Tool, here’s somewhat info concerning the computer software specifications after you have got your hands on a Tech 2 handset.
Firstly, I’m by no implies an specialist on this getting only not too long ago got this up and operating myself, but I believe that is the tricky element. I’d welcome comments on where this post can be improved/altered and so forth. Most of the data is already around on a variety of boards/forums however it would be good to attempt to bring it together for us with a purely Saab interest.

For all those who do not know, the Tech 2 unit (handset) may be employed to interrogate the different management modules on the car or truck (ECU) to report status, fault codes and carry out manual activation and monitoring in the event of fault occurrences/engine management light occurrences. This in itself is extremely useful, nevertheless it can also be achievable to reprogram modules inside the vehicle to adjust a variety of functions and add or replace faulty modules and programme keys. While the diagnosis side can be performed standalone, to become capable to basically change settings on the car, Tech 2 ‘Security Access’ is expected, which suggests activating the Tech two handset through Pc computer software.

The original Tech 2 handsets had been developed by Vetronix/Bosch and had been applied across the GM variety. As a result, the Tech two unit might be made use of on a wide array of automobiles but you must have the appropriate model software loaded on the removable PCMCIA card. This can be what turns the Tech two into a Saab Tech 2. (For those who have mates with GM/Suzuki and so on cars, you are able to do diagnosis on them also by just grabbing the suitable software card.)

The Pc application also adds other functionality for instance being able to update the Tech two software, the auto ECU application, print-outs of ECU information and additional diagnostic solutions – I think the TIS2Web basically involves schematic diagrams along with other WIS (workshop) info, but I have yet to investigate this.

So, for the software itself, there are actually two options.

1. TIS2000
two. TIS2Web/GlobalTIS

For those who get a clone, this commonly comes with a couple of TIS2000 CDs/DVDs. Having said that, these are frequently NAO (North American Operations) and do not involve any UK/European Saab models. In fact the only Saab this can work with is often a 9-7x which was a GM US-built SUV – everyone got certainly one of these??? Anyway, the important point is that this software program only supports models as much as 2007/8 (that is most likely superior enough for most of us) so if you have a later model you will should use TIS2Web (see under). But as I said, this computer software as supplied does not consist of Saab models, so to run it successfully:

a) Download Saab TIS2008-2. That is the update disc you’ll want to turn the GM application into a thing useful. You are able to uncover it if you are patient… Finest to burn the image to a CD.
b) Set up the GM TIS2000 application (must be Windows, 32-bit operating technique). If supplied with a clone, you can find usually two discs. One particular is the app, the other would be the GM update disc, which is not necessary. If this is the case, set up the initial disc only but do not run up the application on completion. When you didn’t get it having a clone, you’ll be able to get a copy with the USB dongle for about £15 (see e) beneath). If prompted to select a registration technique, select USB Essential and OK the prompts.
c) Insert the SaabTIS2008-2 update disc (or mount the drive) into the very same drive you installed the original GM TIS2000 application. That is vital because the application will only appear for updates in the similar drive letter (i.e D:) that was made use of for installation.
d) Start out TIS2000 from the desktop icon/start menu and OK it when it asks to perform the update. When the update is finished, you will have a Saab 2008-2 installation.
e) All that is definitely now essential will be to activate the software program to obtain safety access (enable Tech two programming). To perform this you’ll require a USB crucial and patch readily available in the identical sources because the clone Tech two units. They are around £15 and include the TIS2000 GM application, or might even be supplied with the unit.
TIS2Web or GlobalTIS

TIS2Web is basically an updated version of TIS2000 with some more functionality (I’ve however to play appropriately with it). Some may say that is the preferred alternative as it is backwards compatible with earlier models and covers up to MY2012. The fundamental features are borrowed from TIS2000 though. Only disadvantage is it is a bit trickier to have it functioning.

a) Acquire a copy from the Saab TIS2Web computer software. Once again, this must be the Saab version. You’ll be able to pay less than a tenner for this on the auction internet site, or you can obtain it on the web if you look.
b) Install the computer software. This takes somewhat time and, unlike TIS2000 which makes it possible for a great deal functionality without activation, you cannot do anything with TIS2Web till you have activated it.
c) Open the TIS2Web application. The application runs inside a web browser so will open your default browser. This could take some time to open.
d) When you have got for the registration web page, you have to enter dealer details. This can be gobbledegook but I think you must fill all the fields. Save this after which visit step e).
e) Click around the Email/Fax registration. This may generate a PDF which you need to save. The critical stuff is definitely the Request ID plus the Software Key.
f) To get your activation code, you’ll want to be nice to members on certainly one of a few auto diagnostic forums (unless you realize somebody having a keygen for this). Searching the net for this kind of stuff should really bring them up as major search matches. You’ll have to join the forum, introduce oneself and politely request a code. Do not upset them, they’re helping us out and there’s a bunch of knowledgeable people today on there so no harm in getting a member.
g) Once you have the code, enter it and activate TIS2Web. You’re performed.

Faultfinding the TIS2Web set up.

You might nicely have a couple of issues obtaining the software program running initially. In case your internet browser refuses to connect towards the TIS2Web service, it is most likely that among the two GlobalTIS services aren’t operating. To fix this, open the ‘services’ console either by

Start>Run and form “services.msc”
Right-click ‘My Computer” choose ‘Manage’ and drill down towards the solutions icon around the left pane.

You will discover two solutions that ought to be operating and they’ve got clear names, something like GlobalTIS and TC6 (not close to my TIS Computer in the moment) and sit next to each other inside the services list. In the details pane they ought to say ‘started’. If not, right-click and select ‘start’. If this fails with an error, try modifying the registry essential under.

To open registry editor Start>Run regedit BE Cautious MODIFYING THE REGISTRY – It is possible to Really SCREW YOUR Computer UP!!!!!

Inside the left pane, expand the keys until you discover the following

HKLM\Software\Apache Software program Foundation\Procrun2.0\Global TISTC6\Parameters\Java\JvmMx

Transform the value of this crucial from 0X0000044 to 0X00000200 and exit the registry. Attempt to restart the service – you need to uncover it now operates. Do not ask me why, I got this repair from a different forum – fair play for the guy who found it.

Tech two Hardware Concerns

It is broadly reported that the manufacturing high quality of many of the clone units may be a lot lower than the originals and you will discover reports of difficulties. I discovered that the flat grey ethernet cable supplied with my unit was faulty and brought on me substantially confusion until I threw it out and replaced it with a common network cable. You’ll be able to verify you might have RS232 comms applying the GM TIS2000 set up and going into the car diagnostic tool Tech 2 View alternative. Do not mess about with serial port settings and so forth as if there’s a physical connection there it’ll operate without having interference. Only pins four and 5 on the RJ45 RS232 socket are actually used. The units are also supplied using a loopback adaptor so they can be tested internally.

Sometimes you could possibly obtain the Professional Diagnostic Tool Tech 2 doesn’t connect to the car or truck. Check your connections are secure and reset the VCI module (the factor within the base in the handset held in by the plastic release button).

Wow, pretty a lengthy post. I’ll add more if necessary. Let me know how you guys get on. Please remember that you can Truly BREAK YOUR Vehicles REPROGRAMMING THE ECUS so be really careful, guarantee fantastic battery voltage and excellent connections although uploading data for the ECU. Save what’s on there initially just before you make any major modifications.

Once more, I’m incredibly new to this myself but believed I’d place this right here for like-minded Saab nuts who need to get involved with this stuff. I’m sure you can find others on the forum who have much more know-how and practical experience with the actual programming and diagnostics.

For now, I’m satisfied to have disabled the nagging seatbeat chime (am I the only individual who likes to let their car or truck warm up ahead of driving off?) and altered the boot lock logic so it does not lock itself at every single out there chance. Oh, and I’ve activated the zap sound so I know it’s been locked.

Be careful, have exciting.

P.S I’ve no affiliations with any on the sites/software etc just spent a long time finding this working and wanted to share it to save others the hassle.

The teck 2 scanner is able to check all GM before 2009

I  just did a “Fast-Learn” on a G8’s 6L80E last week with mine. A Snap-On MODUS was not able to do this. There are simply factory diagnostic procedures that a T2 can do on GM vehicles that no other tool can. But yes, to reflash PCM’s, TCM’s, etc, you need to have authorization from the Tech Center, which means you have to be a dealership or a paying subscriber to the service which is a serious chunk of $$$$.

With that said, Bosch (who now owns the rights to GM Tech 2‘s as they purchased out Vetronix), will not support the unit because it’s a factory knock-off. So should you have to replace the VCI module (I’ve had to replace mine due to wear and tear on the connection where it damaged the motherboard inside), or any other necessary repair.

Also, T2’s can only be updated through 2009 MY vehicle info, was my understanding from GM. For 2009+ GM has gone to a new setup called MDI. GM MDI is backwards compatible with pre-2009 GM vehicles (it even has the software on the screen to emulate the screens you’d see on the T2).

So is this teck 2 scanner able to check all GM before 2009 obd2 with out extra software? Also wonder if it can check the cam/ distributor retard timing on vortex 350

I think the GM MDI system will go back to 2009, but the Tech2 seems to work as far as its updated. Obviously I don’t have any 2012-2013 vehicles to try it on though.

It will work on any Car Diagnostic Tool GM OBD2, meaning 1996+.

Here you can see its updated to 2013.

Gm Tech2 TIS2000 failed to run Win7 Virtual Machine

One of OBD2TOOL customer bought the GM Tech2 Scanner and the TIS2000 software CD. He sent an email to our customer service that the GM TIS2000 software did not Run In xp Mode On Win7.

Problem:“I use a GM Tech II diagnostic tool or a gm MDI to attach it to the truck, its on a cd / dvd, its a program i got on-line to reprogram GM BCMS in my truck. my problem is I can load 2007 software [its called ”TIS2000] into my computer [it only runs on a ”win xp” machine”][yes it won’t run in xp mode on a win7 machine],but I need the update to 3/2008 or 8/2008,to get it to see my vin#, so I can add power adj pedals[and some other options, I can’t get the 3/2008 to load. ” Engineers Solution:
Depending on your computer hardware, you could install XP and your app in a Virtual Machine (VM) from Windows 7. Once installed and configured, you would boot your computer like normal and start XP in a window.

VMware makes Virtual Machine software called Workstation v10. They have a trial, but expect money at some point. The second best option for VM software is called VirtualBox from Sun. It is free!
You would just need a compatible computer, a copy of Windows XP and time to learn the ropes and get your XP Virtual Machine (VM) up and running. Learning how to use it is a one-time thing and at that point you’ll be familiar with VM software in general. That is a huge benefit to have as a computer user.

At that point you would meet the requirements of the GM Tech 2 software and would install TIS2000 within the VM and use the virtual com/serial port to connect to your computer serial port (or USB).
